DAB welcomes Government's decision to include Wang Chi House in acquisition scheme, demonstrating genuine care for affected residents
28 April 2026
The DAB welcomes the Government's decision today to include Wang Chi House in the acquisition scheme. We note that the Government has taken into full account owners' concerns over rehabilitation — including reoccupation delays, legal and management complexities, high costs, post‑fire trauma, and loss of property value — which were key factors in reaching this decision.
The DAB noted that when the Government earlier announced its $6.8 billion acquisition of seven blocks at Wang Fuk Court, it had made clear that it would be open to including Wang Chi House if a strong consensus emerged among its owners. Senior officials, including Deputy Financial Secretary Mr. Michael Wong and Secretary for Housing Ms. Winnie Ho, repeatedly stressed that the "door remained open" for discussion, with majority owner consent as a starting point. According to Government data, 77% of residents have now expressed preliminary agreement — a clear indication of mainstream support. The DAB believes that the Government's swift and responsive decision to include Wang Chi House in the acquisition scheme reflects a governance approach grounded in reason, compassion and the rule of law, and underscores its continued care for every resident affected by the fire.
The DAB welcomes the Government's decision to proceed with the extended acquisition at Wang Chi House, following a strong consensus among its owners. We believe this approach will facilitate the unified management of common spaces and building deeds, avoid complications arising from piecemeal acquisitions, and support the long‑term redevelopment and stability of the wider Wang Fuk Court community. We also endorse the Government's prudent and responsible use of public funds, ensuring that taxpayer money is deployed only when a clear majority consensus exists.
The DAB calls for the Government to maintain close communication with Wang Chi House owners, and to address all technical and legal details thoroughly, so that affected residents may receive fair compensation and long‑term resettlement as soon as possible. We will continue to monitor the implementation process closely, assist residents in resolving practical difficulties, and call on the community to support the Government's rehabilitation plan for the Tai Po district.
